Turkey Terms

When talking about turkey, here’s some terms that describe the parts of the bird, the kinds of bird, etc.:

  • Caruncle – brightly colored growths on the throat region.  Turns bright red when the turkey is upset or during courtship.
  • Gizzard - a part of the turkey’s stomach that contains tiny stones. The stones help grind up food for digestion.
  • Hen – a female turkey
  • Tom - a male turkey
  • Poult – a baby turkey – a chick
  • Snood – the flap of skin that hangs over the turkey’s beak. It turns bright red when the turkey is upset or during courtship.
  • Wattle – the flap of skin under the turkey’s chin. Like the snood, it also turns bright red when upset or during courtship
